Danville Schools Coronavirus Statement

March 9th 2020

Dear DCSC Parents and Guardians,

Danville Community School Corporation administration continues to monitor information about COVID-19, a respiratory illness also known as “coronavirus.” There are currently no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in our schools, although there are two confirmed cases in Hendricks County. We continue to work with local and state health organizations and authorities on the issue.

As of this morning, there has been one confirmed case of COVID-19 for a student in a neighboring school district. Yesterday we became aware that one of our substitute teachers is under a voluntary self-quarantine after their spouse attended a conference where another individual has tested positive for COVID-19. Neither the substitute teacher nor their spouse are showing symptoms at this time, and the self-quarantine is out of abundance of caution. The substitute teacher was at North and South Elementary over the last week.

In the event that a case is confirmed in Danville Schools, we will be following guidance from the Indiana State Department of Health and the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) on school closure. It is possible that one or all schools in the district may be closed for an extended period of time.  While we hope this does not become necessary, please be advised that eLearning may be implemented in this event. Additionally, PACE and our Little Warrior Learning Center Preschool may also be closed. Please begin making preparations for alternative childcare should a school closure become necessary.

We will continue to take the recommended steps to keep our school functioning as normal and communicate with our school community. Daily measures continue to be taken to ensure that our buildings are sanitized and we lower our risk of transmission for any infection. Our nurses have been asked by the IDOE to document symptoms if a child is called in sick.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended the following tips to prevent the spread of illness:

  • Regularly wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if washing with soap and water is not immediately available.
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose, and/or mouth
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • Stay at home when experiencing symptoms such as fever or vomiting. Students and staff should be fever free and without the assistance of medications (like Tylenol) for 24 hours before returning to school
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or with the inside of the elbow.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

We have created an informational page on our website in order to share resources and updates. Please visit www.danville.k12.in.us/Page/694 to learn more. Additionally, Hendricks Regional Health has launched a hotline at 317.520.5500 that offers free COVID-19 phone screenings.

Sincerely,

DCSC Administration
