Former Bainbridge Fire Chief Identified as Crash Victim

Bainbridge Fire Department morns their loss

Friday November 23, 2018.

The Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department released the name of the man who died in a crash on State Road 39 near Lizton Friday.

Michael W. Smith, 65, of Bainbridge was driving southbound when a northbound car traveled left over the center line and hit Smith’s van head-on approximately 3:00 p.m. said investigators.

The driver of the northbound car was taken to the hospital by St.Vincent StatFlight in critical condition (see below).

“Bainbridge Fire would like to wish the family of our former chief, Michael Smith, all of our love and condolences at this time. Mike was and will always be remembered for his exemplary service to BVFD and this community.”

Monday November 26th, 2018. Update

Multiple news outlets are reporting 18 year old Kaylee Tuttle of Shelbyville, was the driver of the northbound vehicle. As reported earlier, she was transported via St. Vincent StatFlight to St. Vincent Hospital Indianapolis in critical condition. Sunday she succumb to her injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.

Brownsburg Fire, Pittsboro FireDanville Fire, and North Salem Fire Departments are assisting Lizton Union Township Fire with a serious motor vehicle accident in the 6900 block of North State Road 39.

There was one confirmed fatality on the scene and a second person was flown by St.Vincent StatFlight to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.
