It is with great sadness that we inform our citizens of the passing of Brownsburg Police Department K9 Darro. On Wednesday, October 25th, 2017, at approximately 9:00 PM, K9 Darro was struck by a vehicle at 56th St. and Northfield East Dr. in Brownsburg.

There is an active investigation into the events that led up to this incident.

What we know at this time is that K9 Darro was last seen in his secured enclosure in the backyard of his handler’s residence on October 25th at approximately 8:30 PM. At approximately 9:00 PM, same date, Brownsburg residents had been attempting to secure an unidentified black German Shepherd that was on the loose in the area of 56th and Northfield Dr. The K9 was struck by a vehicle without fault on behalf of the driver of that vehicle. A Brownsburg Officer was flagged down and completed a crash report. The K9 was transported to an animal hospital, but had already died at the scene from his injuries.

On Thursday, October 26th, 2017, in the early morning hours, it was discovered that the unidentified K9 that was struck was our very own Brownsburg Police K9 Darro.

It is unclear at this time how K9 Darro got out of his secured enclosure. This is one of the main objectives of the investigation. K9 Darro’s Handler is working closely with the Department to plan his partner’s funeral service arrangements. The service will be an internal service and not open to the public.
