Brownsburg, IN
Brownsburg Police Detectives have concluded their investigation into the shooting(s) that resulted in two men dead in Brownsburg on March 5, 2025. The case resulted in four (4) persons being charged for various offenses.
During the course of the investigation, Detectives were able to determine that on March 5, 2025, shortly after 2:30 AM, Officers of the Brownsburg Police Department heard numerous gunshots in succession to the southwest of the Brownsburg Police Department (31 North Green Street). Upon canvassing the area and receiving subsequent 911 calls, Officers were able to locate two (2) deceased males inside and/or partially inside a Dodge Durango, in the 300 block of Acre Avenue suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Police located a third subject in the front yard of a residence in the 300 block of Acre Ave. who was frantic and yelling for assistance.
The on-scene investigation identified the two decedents as Lucas Brearley (19 of Indianapolis), who was the rear seat passenger-side occupant, and Zachary Johnson (25 of Indianapolis), who was the rear passenger driver’s- side occupant. The third subject, who was the driver of the Durango, was identified as Logan Huffine (21) of Indianapolis. Huffine remained at the scene and cooperated with police investigators. As the investigation unfolded, a forth subject, who had fled the scene during the shooting(s), was identified as Gavin Ramirez (20) of Indianapolis.
Through the course of the investigation, a substantial amount of evidentiary items were collected, reviewed, and examined, to include items such as different perspectives of recorded footage of the incident and events that led up to the shooting(s), scene reconstruction involving ballistics collection and examination, forensic data collection and examination, and a plethora of interviews.
The investigation revealed the following details of the incident: Huffine, Ramirez, Brearley, and Johnson had all come to Brownsburg to visit friends who are residents of Brownsburg. They were identified as Nicholas Hensley (22), and Heaven Charnes-McCarrell (20). From their residence, Huffine and Johnson engaged in several attempted thefts and thefts from vehicles and/or properties while armed with firearms. Upon returning to retrieve Huffine’s vehicle from the Hensley/Charnes-McCarrell residence, Johnson inadvertently discharged a firearm, which led to all four (4) subjects being asked to leave from the Hensley/Charnes-McCarrell residence.
After the four (4) subjects got into Huffine’s vehicle, Huffine and Johnson wanted to retrieve the items that they had previously stolen and left behind for pick up in the area of Washington Ave./Acre Ave. During this time, Johnson and Brearley, who were both backseat occupants, got into a heated argument that led to a physical altercation, which ultimately resulted in Brearley pulling his firearm and firing multiple shots at Johnson at close range and killing him. The driver, Huffine, returned fire on Brearley, and fired multiple shots resulting in Brearley’s death.
The front seat passenger, Ramirez, exited the vehicle and ran as Huffine was returning fire on Brearley.
After a lengthy investigation, and review of the case with the Hendricks County Prosecutor’s Office the evidence demonstrates that Huffine was defending himself and Johnson. Based on the evidence the Hendricks County Prosecutor declined to file charges against Huffine in the shooting.
