Danville, IN<\/strong> – More than a year after gunfire erupted at a Brownsburg neighborhood, the man responsible for the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Carlos Neri-Guzman has been sentenced.<\/p>\n

A Hendricks County judge today sentenced Darrius Tolbert<\/strong> to 55 years in the Indiana Department of Correction<\/strong> for the March 5, 2024, murder that unfolded in broad daylight outside a neighborhood clubhouse while children were nearby.<\/p>\n

Following a two-day jury trial, Darrius Tolbert\u201418 at the time of the shooting\u2014was convicted of murder after prosecutors proved he was the instigator of the deadly encounter. Evidence showed Carlos Neri-Guzman had arrived at the clubhouse parking lot to meet Tolbert when Tolbert and co-defendant Jeremy Briscoe (15 at the time) approached his vehicle and opened fire within seconds.<\/p>\n

Forensic evidence confirmed the fatal bullet that struck Neri-Guzman in the chest was fired by Tolbert. Despite being critically wounded, Neri-Guzman attempted to drive away before losing consciousness. His vehicle veered off the roadway and crashed into a home in the 10300 block of Memorial Knoll Drive, in the Eagle Crossing neighborhood near Eagle Crossing Drive, where he died at the scene.<\/p>\n

During today’s sentencing, the court identified several aggravating factors, including Tolbert’s role as the instigator, the fact that the murder occurred at a neighborhood clubhouse and park where children were present, and his failure to accept responsibility while the investigation was underway.<\/p>\n

Hendricks County Prosecutor Loren Delp<\/strong> said the sentence reflects accountability for a senseless act of violence.<\/p>\n

“Today was about accountability, but no sentence can ever restore what Carlos’ family lost. A young man’s life was stolen in broad daylight at a neighborhood park… While today’s sentence cannot heal their pain, I hope it provides the certainty that the man responsible for taking Carlos’s life will spend decades behind bars.” – Loren Delp Hendricks County Prosecutor<\/em><\/p>\n

The Hendricks County Prosecutor’s Office extended its gratitude to the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office<\/a><\/span>, lead Detective Don Donaldson, the Indiana State Police Crime Lab<\/a><\/span>, the eyewitnesses who came forward, and the jurors whose service helped bring justice in this case.<\/p>\n
